The facet joint block (medial branch block) or denervation with RF lesioning has higher chances of good result in ‘virgin backs’. In post surgical patients the target areas are either removed or replaced and hence the therapy may not provide good result. So it is better to perform these procedures, prior to any anticipated surgical procedure as it will do no harm or will not change the outcome of surgical procedure should surgery become necessary? By using selective inclusion criteria, good long-term relief may be obtained for patients experiencing facet joint mediated low backpain.
If the diagnostic blocks yield good results then definitive therapy can be considered with radiofrequency or cryotherapy.
