Pain from the coverings of lung (parietal pleura) (ex. from pneumonia, cancer) is often a sharp, piercing, knife like pain worsened by effort or deep respiration. Parietal pleural pain radiates to the neck region, the shoulder area and the chest area. Although this pain may initially be confused with angina (heart attack), angina is not aggravated by coughing or deep respiration.
